Customs of gifting Tallitot
Tallitot is originally the plural form of Tallit. It is the Jewish form of a prayer shawl. Usually the Jews wear a prayer shawl during their prayers on weekdays, holidays and Shabbat. A Tallit features knots and fringes in specially intertwined forms that are also known as tzitzit. This tzitzit is attached to the four corners of the Tallit. You can find a Tallit made of any type of material except for a wool and linen mixture. This is strictly banned by the Torah. Traditionally wool is used for weaving a Tallit.
Customs of gifting Tallitot
Tallit is given by fathers to their sons in some of the Jewish communities. Even a teacher can give this as a gift to his student. Many people prefer to buy a Tallit for the special occasions like wedding. In some cases parents also buy a Tallit for their 13 children including tefilin. In fact, in the conservative movements both men and women are supposed to wear a Tallit. Wedding is one of the prime occasions when a Tallit is used as a canopy. According to the Kabbalists, a Tallit should be specifically worn while serving God. During the morning prayers male worshippers wear Tallitot.
In many of the Sephardic communities the groom is seen wearing a Tallit under the wedding canopy. During the burial ceremonies a Tallit is used to bury the dead. Ones the burial is done, one of the fringes or Tizitzit is then cut off. Moreover, in Israel, burial is done only with Tallit and kittel. Among the various occasions, a Tallit is also worn on a Yom Kippur at night.
Types of Tallit
- Tallit Katan
- Tallit Gadol
A Tallit katan is used by the orthodox Jews and it is small in size. At times, the Hasidic Jews also use the Tallit katan. They use it primarily above their shirts. The materials used in Tallit katan are as same as that of the Tallit gadol.
A Tallit gadol is the prayer shawl worn by the worshippers on their shirts. They usually wear them during the morning prayers at the synagogue. Sometimes the Spanish and Portuguese Jews use Tallit made of silk. Presently some Tallitot are also made from polyester and cotton. A Tallitot comes in shades of black and white. You might even come across Tallitot with edges having shades of blue or white stripes.
Presently in the market you might also find Tallit bags. You will find numerous bags made of Tallit and feature various shades and patterns. These Tallit bags are very affordable.
