Big Leopard Geckos: Giants and Supergiants
Are you in the hunt for big leopard geckos? These big lizards are normally around 100 grams but some morphs can actually get bigger. Much bigger. Read on and get to know these giants and supergiants of the designer lizard world.
All About Sizes
Your lizard can be classified as a giant if they are around 80-110 grams in weight by the time they reach one year of age. The supergiants grow much larger, easily reaching over 110 grams in weight by one year. Now, these creatures are not just fat or especially heavy… they’re proportions should be like a normal lizard, only much larger. Keep this in mind as there is a difference between a true giant and a lizard that’s just obese.
Tremper Giants
One of the most popular breeds and said to be the source of the original giant is the Tremper line of giants and supers. Back in 1999, Ron Tremper produced a particularly large lizard, reaching about 4.5 inches even as a baby. By the end of the first year, it was already about a foot long (11 inches). Plus, it was an albino, meaning that it already possessed the genes of one of the harder recessive traits to produce among the lizard. This first giant then went on to produce more giants. The now famous Moose, the record holder for size among lizards, is the grandson of this first giant.
Genes
These large creatures possess the genes to create the wonderful patterns and colors that you’ve come to love about the lizards. This means you can create giants and supers in albino, tangerine, red stripe, carrot-tail, etc.
The giant trait itself is said to be true co-dominant. This means it is a line bred trait so if you want to produce the bigger creatures, all you have to do is selectively breed the giants and supers with other giants and supers.
The Famous Moose
Moose was one of the first super giants to come into the world. This magnificent creature was born in May 2001, bred from the Tremper line of lizards. By the time he broke the world record for size, he was at 11 and 3/8ths inches long and weighed in at 156 pounds! Sadly, the great Moose passed away in 2007. His legacy lives on though, as many of the giants and super giants of today are either direct decedents of his line or related to him in some way.
The Legacy
Some of the Moose’s decedents have made names for themselves as well. Some reach price ranges of about $500 or so, which is considerable among these lizards. Some like Hot Moose, a beautiful grandson of Moose was said to have been sold for a whopping $1500! You can find many of Moose’s decedents among the many breeders out there and Moose’s legacy is sure to live on for many years to come. With the demand and interest for the big leopard geckos still rising, we can expect bigger and better giants and supers to emerge with every generation.
