My Grandmother’s Sharp Solution To Stress
Most of us get a little hyped up occasionally. It’s nothing to get too concerned about. But it’s a good idea to have ways of relaxing. I like to play squash. I also jog. But I don’t really like jogging though. I find it boring, but relaxing . That’s why I do it. And it’s probably good for my health generally.
But you don’t have to buy special equipment and clothes, or indeed leave your home, in order to de-stress. My grandmother got all the relaxation she could want from cooking. Though it was not just as simple as that. She told me that the two most important means of relieving stress for her where two knife sets she kept on her counter top. Whenever she was preparing one of her excellent meals, there would be the appropriate knife for the current job, either on her left or on her right.
Since, as a kid, I did not understand the concept of stress in the first place, I really had no idea what she was talking about. Now, I know exactly what she meant. Indeed, as somebody who spent, what seems like her whole life, in the kitchen, having de-stressing gadgets nearby, made complete sense.
Knives were not her sole means of relaxing. She had another addiction too. But it was an addiction that was very positive and a great benefit to me and everyone else in the household. That addiction was two cookbooks she had a mini library at one end of her kitchen. On the shelves where books about every conceivable type of cooking from every part of the world. Not only that, but they spanned a huge era. They included very old cookbooks that she could well have inherited from her mother. A veritable treasure chest of culinary secrets.
As a child, of course, I had no idea whether this was normal for all grandmothers or whether mine was unique. One thing was sure, I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have produced for me each day what amounted to haute cuisine food. She emphasized the knives so much and their importance to her stress-free life in the kitchen, that it makes me wonder now if she would have been able to be such a prolific chef without at least one knife set on hand.
I have inherited, not only my grandmother’s love of food, but also her obsession with cooking. I can’t say I inherited her obsession with knives, but there is no doubt that they are amongst the most important implements in any kitchen. Not only that but I have three or four I am never without while cooking.
Finding the best way to relax in the kitchen for me is the act of preparing food itself. That plus the one other gadget, or appliance is probably the more correct word. It relaxes me more than any other device. I’m talking about the countertop microwave. I can’t say that it’s the cooker I use most for my favorite dishes. But it’s what I do use to heat up my mug of coffee, or sometimes tea. And occasionally, especially if I am on my own, I will heat up one of my special home-made, frozen spaghetti Bolognese sauces and indulge myself.
