The Good Samaritan – With a Spiritual Point of view
When we Googled the phrase “Good Samaritan,” the request brought us over 281,000 references of the Good Samaritan on the net. There were a large number of hospitals and medical centers named Good Samaritan, hundreds of Good Samaritan awards, scores of non-profit trust funds named Good Samaritan, along with a great number of newspaper articles on Good Samaritan heroics and helpfulness. But just what is the source of all these references?
Let’s have a look at the Scriptural Good Samaritan story, and then interpret it metaphysically, to present the genuine main character to you. You might want to look at the whole account prior to continuing with this post. You’ll find it in Luke 10:25-37. When you’re finished, come on back. We’ll hang on for you!
Let’s begin by examining just a few specific verses from Luke 10:25-37, to provide some historical background coming from a literal standpoint.
- v27: The legal expert responds easily, reiterating the passages from the Torah (Deut 6:5 along with Lev 19:18). He wanted to demonstrate he was obviously a student of the law, that he knew his Torah.
- v29: He desired Jesus’ approval to follow the letter of the law and to restrict who he considered a neighbor. It would be like asking for permission not to help a member of a hate group who has been hurt (like a neo-Nazi or possibly a clansman). The Greek word for neighbor is plesion which is interpreted as “the close one.” It meant individuals just like you in social standing, religious faith, ethnicity, and so forth. The lawyer hoped that’s what Jesus intended.
- v30: In this verse, the words “a certain man” comes from the Greek Word anthropostis, which means somebody/anyone. Jesus was not intending to give the lawyer a way out. The road between Jericho and Jerusalem was unsafe in addition to notorious for bandits. Jericho was under sea level.
- v32: The law was if a person touched a dead body or came into contact with the blood of someone unclean, they would be defiled for seven days and not permitted to perform their given religious duties.
- v33: The Jews abhorred the Samaritans. Samaritans were the descendants of those Jews who continued to be in northern Israel after it had been conquered by Assyria in the 8th Century B.C. They were uncircumcised, intermarried Gentiles, and refused to recognize the temple in Jerusalem.
- v37: The lawyer probably stopped before he replied to Jesus’ question. He, just like some other Jews, loathed the Samaritans so much he was unable to bring himself to state the term Samaritan. He said, “He that demonstrated mercy.” And Jesus responded, “You got that right.” We’re paraphrasing, of course.
For Jesus, there were no untouchables within the Kingdom of God. And the point He wanted to make to the lawyer – and also to all of us – would be to not let our religion replace our spirituality or compassion. If the sole point of Jesus’ parable had been simply promoting a sense of civility and goodwill, it would definitely have been a good message. But it really has a much greater meaning. Let’s have a metaphysical perspective, so we can put a higher consciousness, more spiritual point of view to the parable.
- Lawyer = our propensity to use the letter of the law to justify our conduct
- Injured Man (the leading metaphysical character) = human awareness; the thoughts, feelings, and actions in most people
- Jerusalem = Heart-centered consciousness of tranquility and spirituality
- Jericho = Materially-focused desires that spring from your ego’s fears and selfishness
- Robbers = our egocentric, damaging thoughts that deplete our bodies of its energy and vitality
- Priest and Levite = religious inclinations that are not able to view the connection between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law
- Samaritan = the Christ of us
- Oil and wine = oil is love; wine is abundant life
- Inn = pure, open Divine thoughts
- Innkeeper = the Holy Spirit
- 2 denarii = the cost we all pay out for reconnecting the human personality with Spirit
- Neighbor = our physical body and emotions which can be impacted by our thoughts
The metaphysical significance of this parable are quite evident. If we elect to leave the peace and serenity of our spirituality (Jerusalem) and adhere to the temptations of our material sense consciousness (Jericho), we rob ourselves of our energy and vitality. Our error thinking can take us over risky physical and emotional terrain, occasionally producing life-threatening health issues.
Our wholeness will likely be renewed once we increase our consciousness (the Inn) and accept the wisdom and support that comes from our inner Divinity, which gives comfort through the Holy Spirit.
This is why the parable is not regarding the Samaritan in any way. It is about us all.
- It is about our connection with the Christ of us.
- It concerns our falling in and out of a state of grace.
- It reminds us of our awesome and unfailing oneness to Spirit.
- It encourages all of us to experience Christ thoughts so we will make Christ decisions.
And – it assures us that we shall be comforted, once we walk the spiritual path on practical feet!
