All About Hebrew Months
Let me tell you some quite remarkable things about the Hebrew months of the year. There is a lot to be said.
For example, did you know that unlike the secular calendar, there are actually two months which are the start of the year, but are six months apart? Tishrei and Nisan are the names of the head of the year months.
Tishrei contains the Jewish festivals of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Succot whereas Nisan contains the Jewish festival of Pesach – or Passover in English.
Another interesting fact about the List of Hebrew months is that there is a thirteenth month which occurs in a cycle of 7 times in 19 years when there is a leap year. This month is called Adar Bet which could also be called, the second Adar since when there is a leap year, there is Adar Aleph and Adar Bet.
Just as a side point, you may have noticed that I used Aleph and Bet above which is the source of the word Alphabet!
The names of the other months are Tishrei, Cheshvan, Kislev, Tevet, Shvat, Nisan, Iyar, Sivan, Tamuz, Av, Elul which makes ten months in all.
In each month of the year apart from one of them, Cheshvan, there are Jewish festivals that are celebrated. Because there are less days in the Jewish/Hebrew calendar than the normal secular calendar that we use, this is why we have a leap year. This is also why every year the Jewish festival will come out on different dates.
If you really want to know the dates of the Jewish festivals then you must take a look at a Jewish calendar which is something which it is pretty easy to find on the internet. However, if you simply want to see a list of Jewish months of the year then you should go to a page which just lists the months.
The words for month and year in Hebrew are chodesh and shana!
